Starting on 1 January 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) imposed a sulfur cap of 0.5% in fuel oil. The substantial sulfur reduction from 3.5% m/m to 0.5% m/m applies for ships operating outside emission control areas (ECA).
In ECAs like the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and US Caribbean Sea, the limit of 0.10% is already in effect with the use of marine distillates and ULSFO (Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel Oil).

Fuel Solutions
There exist different options to comply with the new regulations. Rollover to explore some of the most common solutions:
-
MGO covers the range of marine fuels that consists of distillates only and is high in availability and compatibility.
Marine Gasoil
-
Scrubbers are exhaust gas cleaning systems that can be installed in order to allow shipowners to continue burning HSFO, while remaining compliant with IMO 2020.
HSFO With Scrubbers
-
Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil covers the new range of blended products that contains a maximum of 0.5% sulfur, which makes it an IMO compliant fuel outside ECAs.
VLSFO
-
Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel Oil contains a maximum of 0.1% sulfur and is primarily used by ships operating in ECAs.
ULSFO
-
Liquified Natural Gas is among the cleanest burning fossil fuel forms, with almost zero sulfur emissions and a reduced CO2 footprint. There is a growing availability of LNG bunkers but it is still not widely available.
LNG
-
Electrical power, biofuels, hydrogen, methanol and other alternative energy sources are viable options but currently not widely available in all ports.
